Let Me Be a Woman - Elisabet Elliot

"Let Me Be a Woman" was written by Elisabeth Elliot for her daughter, Valerie Elliot, at the height of the feminist movement in 1976. The teachings contained in it are precious for today's day and age about what it means to be a Christian woman. To understand the meaning of femininity, we must begin with God. If He is indeed “the Creator of all things visible and invisible,” He is certainly in charge of all things, visible and invisible, stupendous and tiny, magnificent and trivial. God must be in charge of the details if He is truly in charge of the whole project.

Being a woman is not an accident

We sometimes hear the expression “the accident of sex,” as if the fact that someone is male or female were a triviality. It is far from trivial, for it is part of our nature. It is the mode in which we live our entire lives; what you and I are called to be by God, the God who is in charge. It is our destiny, planned, ordained, and brought to pass by a Lord who is infinite in his wisdom, power, and love.

Women are not called to somehow "overcome" their sexuality, but to affirm it. They are to use it as a gift from God. Infidelity to one's own sex is infidelity to the whole world, for a woman must be a woman both in her relationships with men and with other women.
