Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758): The only son among 11 children born to Timothy and Esther Edwards. He was, above all, a convincing preacher and a caring pastor. He is known as one of the greatest theologians and philosophers in American history and was one of the forerunners of the era of Protestant missionary expansion in the 18th century. The life of this revivalist is a great example of dedication to God in the development of his intellect. From 1751 to 1757, Jonathan was invited to pastor the church in Stockbridge, and the congregation, in addition to English settlers, included Native Americans, with 150 Mohican and Mohawk families. In 1758, he assumed the post of president of Princeton University, but a few months after his arrival, he contracted smallpox and died on March 22, 1758, at the age of 53.
